The High Chaparral
"Tells All on Mark Slade"

16 Magazine
June 1968

Just to set the record straight, I do just fine on horseback!  Ask Mark who has been giving him horseback-riding lessons for the past month or so -- me, that's who!  He gives me ice-skating lessons (cos he's a great ice-skater) and I help him onto his horse.  He's learning how now, and soon he'll be riding as well as I do!

I've known Mark for over a year and a half.  He's a groovy guy and has the wildest sense of humor on the High Chaparral set.  I was the last "regular" to be signed, so I felt like an outsider when I arrived -- but Mark made me feel right at home.

Mark is a serious actor.  He really throws himself into his role as "Billy Blue."  He's a multi-talented guy -- he can do anything!  His artwork knocks me out, as well as his impressions of famous people.  You should hear him talk like Gabby Hayes -- it's a riot!  We were talking the other day about putting an act together.  He'll do Gabby and I'll do Dale Robertson.  It'll be just perfect for the Ed Sullivan Show, don'tcha think?  We'll call ourselves Darrow and Slade, of course!

Mark is the best "put-on" artist on the show.  He puts me on all the time -- and you should see him in action when the guest stars come on the set.  Wow!  It's a real joy to watch Mark in action.

Mark and I go to the ice hockey games whenever we can.  Since I've been ice-skating with mark, I know what a great skater he is.  He's darn near as good on the ice as most of the professional hockey players!  Too bad he's not as goon at horseback riding!

All kidding aside, Mark Slade is a great guy -- a great actor -- and a great friend!
